Learn to Weave

MWG offers two weaving classes through the Adult & Community Enrichment (ACE) program in Sarasota. Classes are held at Suncoast Technical College, 4748 Beneva Road. Please consult the online ACE Course Catalog (under Arts) for dates, times and fees.

These classes are designed and taught by our own MWG members. If you would like to get involved – winding warps, warping looms, or helping out in the classroom – please contact the Outreach Chair. All are welcome and encouraged to participate. It’s a lot of fun, and we can’t offer these very popular classes without your help!

Intro to Weaving: Give it a Try!

Learning basic weaving skills.
Learning basic weaving skills

In this introductory two-session class, students will explore the fun and creativity of the ancient art of weaving. Students receive 6 hours of instruction on our 4-shaft looms, learning the parts of the loom and how to use this clever device to make cloth. Warping the loom will NOT be taught in this class, so new weavers can focus on the basic rhythms of weaving and the use of color and design. A brief discussion of draft reading will also be included to gain an understanding of patterns and each student will take home their project. No experience necessary, and all equipment and materials are included.

Learn to Weave

This is a follow-up course offered to students who have completed Intro to Weaving or who have some basic weaving knowledge. In this 6-session course, students will receive 18 hours of instruction as well as time to work on their own at home, learning the foundations of weaving from planning a project and warping the loom to finishing the cloth. All equipment and most materials are included.
